1. Determine the Installation Location

The type of property—be it an HDB flat, condominium, landed property, office space, warehouse, or container unit—plays a crucial role in the aircon installation process. Each setting has specific guidelines and restrictions that must be adhered to. For instance, HDB flats have particular regulations concerning the placement and type of air conditioning units allowed. ​

2. Choose the Appropriate Type of Air Conditioner

Understanding the different types of air conditioners is essential:

  • Casement Air Conditioner: Rectangular and vertically oriented, this unit is mounted on a window bracket. It’s typically non-inverter and easier to install but can be noisier due to the compressor being part of the unit. ​
  • Window Air Conditioner: Installed below the window on a metal bracket, this non-inverter unit is produced by brands like Europace and LG. ​
  • Multi-Split Air Conditioner: The most common type in Singapore, comprising an outdoor compressor unit connected to one or more indoor units via copper pipes. This setup efficiently cools multiple rooms. ​
  • Ceiling Cassette Unit: Similar to the multi-split system but with an indoor unit mounted on the ceiling, distributing air evenly through four flaps. This type is generally suitable for commercial properties and certain condominiums but not for HDB flats. ​

3. Calculate the Required BTU

The British Thermal Unit (BTU) measures an air conditioner’s cooling capacity. Selecting the correct BTU is vital for efficient cooling. Factors influencing BTU requirements include room size, ceiling height, number of occupants, and the presence of heat-generating equipment. Accurate BTU calculation ensures the aircon system meets your cooling needs without overworking. ​

4. Understand Aircon Piping and Trunking

Proper installation of piping and trunking is crucial to prevent issues like condensation and leaks:

  • Piping: High-quality, thicker insulation is recommended to absorb condensation effectively and reduce the risk of future problems.
  • Trunking: Made from fire-resistant materials like Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), trunking conceals refrigerant pipes, electrical cables, and drainage hoses, ensuring a clean and professional appearance. Choosing the correct size and brand of trunking is essential to prevent condensation and maintain aesthetics. ​

5. Consider Aircon Brackets

If your property lacks an aircon ledge, installing a sturdy aircon bracket is necessary to support the outdoor compressor unit. Proper installation is crucial to prevent hazards and comply with safety regulations.

6. Professional Installation and Maintenance
