Delve into the world of creativity using perforated paper for embroidery.

If you have developed a hobby of embroidery, you must be keen on trying different ways to express your creativity. Perforated paper is a wonderful alternative to threads that can be used for embroidery. Perforated paper for embroidery had become popular in the Victorian era. At that time, the Industrial Revolution made it convenient to mass-produce precise punched cards made of perforated papers. Perforated papers can be considered potential alternatives to fabrics used for cross-stitching. Though it is called paper, it is more like a thin card. This paper comes with regular grids or holes that are punched in it.

Perforated papers for embroidery come in a natural white colour. Also, there are several colours available for the same including metallic colours. The metallic colours are wonderful for carrying out embroidery works for different festive seasons. While the white perforated papers are of standard price as that of white embroidery paper, the coloured ones are a bit pricey.

When should perforated paper be used for embroidery cross stitch?

Perforated papers were used to make greeting cards, tokens, and trinket bowls in the Victorian era. Some people love to use these papers because they impart layered designs. This design leads to the production of a three-dimensional effect. This effect is produced when several layers of stitches are applied one on another’s top. Such designs are used for making wall-hanging, embroidered ornaments, fridge magnets, small keepsakes, or perforated shelf talkers. You can use perforated papers if you want to make advanced designs for greeting cards or gift tags.

Besides perforated paper, there are perforated plastic canvasses as well. These can also be used for embroidery work. However, it is a bit difficult. Since paper has more flex and is lighter in weight, it can be made handy if you are willing to put several layers altogether.

How do you carry out stitching on perforated paper?

You should begin by cutting out the size you need for your paperwork and putting equal borders on all sides. The border should be somewhat thick on all sides. This is because if the sides of the paper get dirty, it can be trimmed off. Remember that this is paper and cannot be washed and cleaned. One of the great things about perforated papers is that they do not fray. However, you might find that the embroidery threads get caught on the edges of the paper as the stitching continues. If you see that it is happening quite frequently, you can trim the sides of the paper up to a row of holes. This is done to leave a smooth edge.

Perforated papers are fairly solid and sturdy. However, it is still paper, so it can easily be ripped or creased. You should not pull the threads very tight as it can rip apart the holes in the paper. You do not need to place a hoop or frame for stitching on the same. When stitching, you should never run the threads a long way through the back. You should always pull them down across the stitches. You should never run the threads across any gaps present. This can become very visible through the invisible areas of the paper. The back of the perforated paper should be kept as flat as possible. If two strands are used for stitching, you can ensure you are getting the best coverage possible. This can be done by ‘laying’ the threads synchronically.

Conclusion

It can be concluded that perforated papers are wonderful options for creating immensely creative embroidery. These papers can be beneficial over other mediums of stitching due to their sturdiness. It can create several items, such as cards, tokens, and decorative items. Ours is a renowned company that deals in perforated papers.
